Dancing the Space Inbetween

Genre: Performance/Dance

Length: 7 mins 03 seconds

Dancing the Space Inbetween is a short dance film inspired by the Regina Indian Industrial School's unmarked cemetery on Pinkie Road in Regina, Saskatchewan. Conceived by Lacy Morin-Desjarlais and made in collaboration with Michele Sereda, Dancing the Space Inbetween is Lacy's prayer to the children buried in the cemetery and also the way she wished to honour the families, communities and legacy of the Regina Indian Industrial School (1891-1910).

Shot on location in the field behind the cemetery on the outskirts of Regina. Aaron Bernakevitch, Director of Photography, beautifully captures Lacy's vision and choreography, while David Roman of Roman Empire Studios, composed the haunting music and soundscape for the film. Lacy worked closely with Michele by going into ceremony together before beginning choreography. The two rehearsed together for a month before shooting. Michele worked closely with video editors, Trudy Stewart and Janine Windolph, while consulting Lacy to reaffirm her vision.

The film was finalized just two short days before the tragic car accident that would sadly claim the lives of Lacy Morin-Desjarlais and Michele Sereda, as well as Narcisse Blood, Michael Green and Morley Hartenberger on February 10, 2015, on Highway 6 north of Regina.

We honoured the late Lacy Morin-Desjarlais' wishes and shared her work with the world.  The film has/will screen(ed) at the following festivals:
